Juvéderm vs Restylane: which HA filler brand is better for your treatment area?
A direct brand comparison of Juvéderm and Restylane hyaluronic acid filler families — product-by-product breakdown by treatment area, consistency differences, and how to choose.

Juvéderm and Restylane are the two dominant hyaluronic acid (HA) filler brands in the US — both made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid, both reversible with hyaluronidase, but with different formulation technologies that make specific products from each line better suited to specific treatment areas. Here's how to navigate the two brand families.
The core technology difference
Both brands use cross-linked HA, but with different proprietary technologies:
Juvéderm (Allergan/AbbVie): Uses VYCROSS technology (in most premium products) — a cross-linking method that blends high and low molecular weight HA chains for a smooth, cohesive gel. Results in very smooth injection and malleable consistency.
Restylane (Galderma): Uses NASHA (Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid) technology in older products and OBT (Optimal Balance Technology) in newer products. NASHA gels have a slightly particulate, "granular" texture; OBT products are smoother. Restylane tends to have a slightly firmer, more lifting quality in comparable products.
What this means clinically: Neither is objectively better. The difference is consistency — Juvéderm products tend to be softer and more spreadable; Restylane products in the NASHA line tend to hold their shape more rigidly. Experienced injectors often prefer one brand for specific anatomical areas based on these properties.
Product-by-product comparison by treatment area
Cheeks and midface volume
| Juvéderm | Restylane |
|---|---|
| Voluma XC — the reference standard for cheek augmentation; FDA-cleared for cheeks; high G-prime (lifting capacity); lasts up to 2 years | Lyft — equivalent to Voluma; FDA-cleared for cheeks and hands; slightly firmer; similar longevity |
Verdict: Both are strong choices. Voluma has longer market history in the US cheek market; Lyft is preferred by some injectors for its slightly firmer lift.
Lips
| Juvéderm | Restylane |
|---|---|
| Volbella XC — subtle, soft; best for fine lines above the lip and subtle lip enhancement; very natural result | Silk — smooth, fine-particle; FDA-cleared specifically for lips; precise for lip border definition |
| Ultra XC — more volume; classic choice for lip augmentation | Kysse — OBT technology; highly flexible; FDA-cleared for lip augmentation; designed to move naturally with lip motion |
Verdict: Kysse is frequently cited by injectors for natural feel and movement in the lips — Restylane has an edge here for many providers. Ultra XC works well for patients wanting clear volume addition. Volbella for subtle enhancement or perioral lines.
Nasolabial folds and smile lines
| Juvéderm | Restylane |
|---|---|
| Ultra Plus XC — the traditional workhorse for NLF correction | Defyne — flexible gel; FDA-cleared for NLF and marionette lines; maintains flexibility with facial movement |
| Vollure XC — VYCROSS formulation; FDA-cleared for NLF; lasts 18 months in studies; smooth and moldable | Refyne — softer than Defyne; for moderate NLF; designed for flexibility |
Verdict: Vollure (Juvéderm) and Defyne (Restylane) are both modern, long-lasting choices for NLF. Many injectors prefer Vollure for its longevity (18 months) and smooth integration.
Jawline and chin
| Juvéderm | Restylane |
|---|---|
| Volux XC — Juvéderm's highest G-prime product; FDA-cleared specifically for jawline and chin definition; very firm; lasts 18–24 months | Lyft (off-label for jaw/chin) — high G-prime; firm; structurally appropriate for chin and jawline |
| Voluma XC (off-label for chin) — widely used for chin projection | Contour — newer Restylane product designed for jawline definition |
Verdict: Volux (Juvéderm) is the first FDA-cleared product specifically for jawline/chin in the US; it's the reference product for structural lower-face work.
Tear troughs
Both brands' softer HA products are used off-label under the eyes. The tear trough is a high-risk area regardless of brand — the critical variables are the injector's skill and placement depth, not the brand.
- Preferred products: Restylane (original, NASHA) and Volbella/Belotero Balance (Merz) are commonly cited for tear troughs due to their low water absorption and reduced risk of swelling/Tyndall effect.
- Avoid high-volume products (Voluma, Lyft) in the tear trough — too firm, visible risk high.
Temples
Both Voluma and Lyft are used for temple hollow correction — injected deep at periosteum. Brand matters less here than injector skill (superficial temporal artery risk).
Duration comparison
| Area | Juvéderm | Restylane |
|---|---|---|
| Lips | Volbella: 12 months; Ultra: 6–9 months | Kysse: 12 months; Silk: 6 months |
| Cheeks | Voluma: 18–24 months | Lyft: 12 months (some studies 18) |
| NLF | Vollure: 18 months | Defyne: 12 months |
| Chin/Jaw | Volux: 18–24 months | Contour: 12–18 months |
Duration varies significantly by individual metabolism, injection depth, and movement in the treated area. Lips dissolve faster than static areas. These are averages from FDA approval studies.
Which brand does your injector prefer?
For most patients, the injector's product expertise matters more than the brand choice. An injector who has done 500 Kysse lip treatments will produce better results with Kysse than with Volbella they've rarely used. When you see an injector, ask:
- What's your go-to product for this area and why?
- How much of your lip volume work uses Kysse vs. other products?
The brand decision should be driven by the injector's preference and your anatomical goals — not marketing materials.
Both brands are HA = both are reversible
A critical point regardless of brand: all HA fillers (Juvéderm and Restylane) are reversible with hyaluronidase. This is the primary safety advantage of HA over non-HA fillers (Radiesse, Sculptra, silicone). See our filler dissolving guide for details.
Cost comparison
Both brands are priced similarly — by syringe:
- Juvéderm: $600–$1,200 per syringe (Volux/Voluma higher end; Ultra/Volbella lower end)
- Restylane: $550–$1,100 per syringe (Contour/Lyft higher; Silk lower)
The premium is in the procedure cost (injector time, consultation) more than the product itself. Brand is rarely the primary cost driver.
Questions to ask before booking
- For my treatment area, which specific product (by name, not just brand) do you recommend?
- What is the G-prime and consistency of that product, and why is it appropriate for this area?
- What longevity do you realistically expect for my metabolism and this area?
- Do you have a brand preference and if so, what's the clinical reason?
- For lips specifically: do you prefer Kysse or Ultra and what results do patients get with each?
