Wellness & IV

Aesthetic clinics have expanded into functional wellness — IV nutrient therapy, peptide protocols, and hormone optimization. These services are medically supervised and require a licensed clinician, which distinguishes them from wellness centers offering unlicensed infusions. Here's what the main categories involve and what to look for in a clinician.

IV nutrient therapy

IV therapy delivers vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system for higher bioavailability than oral supplements. Common protocols include the 'Myers cocktail' (B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium), high-dose vitamin C for immune support, and NAD+ infusions for energy and cellular health. Evidence for IV therapy is strongest for patients with documented deficiencies or absorption issues. For healthy patients, benefits are often subjective but many report improved energy and recovery. Must be administered by a licensed clinician (RN, NP, PA, or physician) — not an unlicensed aesthetician.

Peptide therapy

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal the body to perform specific functions. In wellness medicine, the most prescribed categories include growth hormone secretagogues (sermorelin, ipamorelin/CJC-1295) for body composition and recovery, and BPC-157 / TB-500 for tissue repair. GLP-1 receptor agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide) for weight management are technically in this category and have the strongest evidence base of any peptide class. All require a prescription and should only be prescribed after a clinical evaluation including bloodwork.

Hormone optimization

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) addresses declining hormones — testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA, thyroid — that affect energy, body composition, mood, and libido. BHRT uses hormones that are molecularly identical to those produced by the body, typically delivered as topical creams, injections, or pellets. Testosterone therapy is the most common for both men and women (at much lower doses). All hormone protocols require baseline bloodwork, clinical evaluation, and ongoing monitoring — not something to start without a physician or NP's oversight.

Frequently asked questions

Is IV therapy safe?
IV therapy administered by a licensed clinician (RN, NP, PA, or physician) in a clinical setting is generally safe. Risks include infection, phlebitis, and electrolyte imbalances if not properly formulated. Never receive IV therapy from an unlicensed clinician or in a setting without clinical supervision and emergency equipment available.
What is semaglutide and can I get it at a clinic?
Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist prescription medication for weight management. Many clinics with licensed prescribers offer semaglutide and compounded GLP-1 protocols. It requires a clinical evaluation, BMI and health history review, and ongoing monitoring. It is a prescription medication — any clinician offering it without a clinical evaluation is operating outside the standard of care.
Does bioidentical hormone therapy require a prescription?
Yes. Bioidentical hormones (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone in any form) are prescription-controlled substances. They require a licensed clinician (MD, DO, NP, or PA) who can order baseline labs, evaluate your hormone levels and symptoms, and monitor your response over time. No legitimate clinician will prescribe hormones without this process.
